About the Work

This hand-coloured copper engraving depicts Bern from the north across the loop of the river Aare — the cathedral, the Zytglogge clock tower, the Nydegg church and the medieval city walls all clearly identifiable. The bilingual German/French legend and the signatures of the draughtsman (Frich) and engraver (Leizel) make this a documented record of 18th-century Bern. The strong, well-preserved original hand-colouring gives the view remarkable freshness.

Provenance

An early-coloured copper-engraved view of the city of Bern from the north, signed 'Frich del.' and 'Leizel scu.', with a bilingual key to the buildings. A classic piece of Bernese urban history from a private collection in Zug, presented in a discreet wooden frame with a mount.
