About the Work

This hand-coloured view depicts Bern's landmark – the Gothic minster – within a lively old-town scene featuring a fountain and the equestrian monument to Swiss freedom hero Rudolf von Erlach. The English caption points to a Victorian travel publication that helped make Switzerland internationally famous in the 19th century. Signed by Niedermann and delicately hand-coloured, the sheet is an atmospheric piece of Swiss pictorial history.

Provenance

The label 'Portmann Einrahmungen Zug' on the back documents professional framing in Central Switzerland and places the work in a private collection in Zug. The print comes from an English-language Swiss publication of the late 19th century and is signed by the artist Niedermann: a lovingly coloured souvenir of historic Bern.
