About the Work

This hand-coloured lithograph from 1824 depicts a woman in Bernese folk costume wearing the famous lace wing bonnet – an eye-catcher and emblem of Bernese folk art. Drawn by Édouard Pingret and lithographed at the workshop of Godefroy Engelmann, the pioneer of lithography in France, this plate belongs to an early series of Swiss regional costumes. The fresh original colouring and the elegant gilt frame make it both a decorative and a collectible piece.

Provenance

A charming and historically traceable sheet: designed in 1824 by Édouard Pingret and lithographed in the studio of Godefroy Engelmann, two names that stand for the early days of French lithography. The woman wearing a Bernese winged bonnet embodies the fascination that Swiss folk costume held for 19th-century travellers and artists. In a fine gilt frame with a decorative mount, the work shows fresh original colouring and a dignified patina of age.
