About the Work

This hand-coloured lithograph comes from the celebrated series of Swiss costume plates after Edouard Pingret, printed in the Paris workshop of Godefroy Engelmann – one of the most important lithographers of his era, who established the technique in France. Dated 1824, the sheet depicts a charming genre pair from the Canton of Solothurn in richly coloured festive dress. The vivid colouring and clear cantonal attribution make it a fine document of Swiss folk costume tradition.

Provenance

A dated original from 1824: this early-coloured lithograph shows a couple in Solothurn costume after a drawing by Edouard Pingret, printed by Godefroy Engelmann in Paris, the man who made lithography respectable in France. The sheet has kept its strong hand colouring for two centuries and sits in a simple gilt frame with a finely ruled mount. An authentic piece of Swiss folk culture with name, date and canton.
