About the Work

This hand-coloured print depicts one of Switzerland's most spiritually significant sites: the Ranft hermitage of Saint Nicholas of Flüe (Brother Klaus), national patron and peacemaker of 1481. The fresh colouring and charming costumed figures make it an evocative piece of Swiss devotional and cultural history in mid-19th-century style. The reverse stamp of the Frz. Sedlacek-Acklin bookbindery in Zug documents its local Central-Swiss provenance.

Provenance

Acquired in Central Switzerland and stamped on the back in blue by the bookbindery Frz. Sedlacek-Acklin in Zug, fine evidence of its local origin and of earlier framing or mounting in a Zug workshop. The sheet evidently belonged to a regional collection of Swiss views.

Inscriptions

'HERMITAGE DE NICOLAS DE FLUE.' / '(UNTERWALD)' / links unten: 'Girard del.' / rechts unten: 'Bichop sc.'
