About the Work

A charming mid-19th-century Swiss view: the sweeping panorama across the turquoise waters of Lake Geneva towards the city of Geneva, framed by the majestic Alpine backdrop. The elegant strollers in Biedermeier dress and the stately country villa lend the sheet a narrative, almost novelistic quality. The fresh original hand-colouring and the period gold frame make this piece a genuine eye-catcher.

Provenance

From a private collection in Zug. The back bears the stamp of the frame maker E. Rüegg of Oberdorf/Walchwil (canton of Zug) and a label of the framing workshop Macek + Co, evidence of a well-kept, locally framed provenance in Central Switzerland. The sheet has been carefully kept for decades and shows pleasingly fresh colouring.
