About the Work
This hand-coloured plate depicts one of the most famous shrines of Swiss national mythology: the Tell Chapel in the Hohle Gasse near Küssnacht, where legend says William Tell shot the tyrant Gessler. Published by the venerable Zurich house of H. Füssli & Co. and engraved by A. Bentz, the work unites Swiss freedom history with the romantic landscape sensibility of around 1800. The publisher's blind stamp and clear chain of signatures make it a well-documented collector's item.
Provenance
A label on the back documents the provenance through the 'Kunsthandlung R. Aeschbach, Zürich, Löwenstrasse 11', an established Zurich art dealer. The sheet was published by H. Füssli & Co. in Zurich and engraved by A. Bentz after a design by H. Füssli. It shows the legendary Tell Chapel near Küssnacht in the canton of Schwyz. The original early colouring, the elaborate gold-ruled mount and the blind stamp underline the authentic, well-documented character of this Swiss national monument in print.
