About the Work
Frederick Mackenzie was one of the leading architectural draughtsmen of his era – his views of Oxford and Cambridge, published by Rudolph Ackermann, are today considered standard references of Regency printmaking. Daniel Havell, among the most skilled engravers of the Ackermann workshop, translated Mackenzie's drawings into copper with admirable precision. The period hand-colouring lends the print a warmth and vitality that no machine-age reproduction can match.
Provenance
The work comes from a Swiss private collection and was professionally framed by Jakob Keller Einrahmungen in Winterthur, a mark of quality that speaks for careful handling of the print. The hand colouring is contemporary and remarkably fresh. Anyone looking for an elegant piece of English cultural history, for a study, a library or as a gift with a Cambridge connection, will find here a genuine contemporary of Ackermann from the heyday of the British architectural view.
