About the Work

This 1787 copper engraving is based on a design by Paul Sandby R.A., the 'father of English watercolour' and founding member of the Royal Academy – a major name in English landscape art. The sheet depicts Brocket Hall, the Palladian country seat of Lord Melbourne, set in idyllic parkland with an ox team and a river scene. Its documented provenance as an official gift from the London Stock Exchange in 1994 makes this a genuine conversation piece with a story.

The label on the back clearly documents the provenance: 'Presented by the London Stock Exchange on the occasion of the 45th FESE General Assembly at Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, England, 6th–8th November 1994'. The work was thus presented by the London Stock Exchange at the 45th General Assembly of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE): a piece with documented corporate history, recalling a high-profile European financial event.
