About the Work

A charming pair of hand-coloured botanical engravings from the early 19th century, depicting restharrow and a blue-flowering navelwort in delicate hand colouring. Such botanical plates were part of the great natural-history reference works of the period and work well as decorative pairs. The provenance via the Rudolf Raubach art dealership in St. Gallen adds a further anchor in Swiss collecting history.

Provenance

The back of the frame bears the original gold label of the 'Kunsthandlung Rudolf Raubach, St. Gallen', evidence of framing and provenance from an established eastern Swiss art dealer. The two botanical sheets, with the Latin names 'Ononis rotundifolia' and 'Cynoglossum omphalodes', are set as a harmonious pair in a shared mount and are ready to hang.
