About the Work

This richly hand-coloured souvenir sheet gathers eleven views of the city of St. Gallen around 1860 – from the atmospheric panorama with its abbey towers to the town hall, St. Laurenzen church, the Poststrasse, the railway station and the region's characteristic bridges. Drawn, engraved and printed by the Lenzburg master J.L. Rüdisühli and published by Chr. Krüsi in Basel. These multi-view 'souvenir' sheets are topographical witnesses of early tourism, documenting St. Gallen at the dawn of the railway and textile era.

According to the collector's label on the back, this is an 'Original Stahlstich von J.L. Rüdisühli, Ausgabe bei Krüsi, Basel 1860, handkoloriert, Sujet: Souvenir von St. Gallen' (original steel engraving by J. L. Rüdisühli, published by Krüsi, Basel 1860, hand-coloured). This clear documentation matches the signature in the image ('Zeich. Stich u. Druck v. J.L. Rüdisühli in Lenzburg' / 'Verlag v. Chr. Krüsi in Basel') and makes the sheet a well-documented record of the history of St. Gallen.
