About the Work
The «Journal des Demoiselles» was one of the leading Parisian fashion magazines of the 19th century. Each month its hand-coloured plates showed readers the latest styles of the capital. This plate from August 1891 captures the shift from the bustle to the puffed-sleeve silhouette of the 1890s. Its caption names the dressmaker Pelletier-Vidal, the perfume house Guerlain on Rue de la Paix and other Paris addresses, so it reads like a Belle Époque shopping guide. Crisp steel-engraved lines and fresh blue accents make this framed sheet an elegant eye-catcher for a dressing room, boutique or salon.
