About the Work

Conrad Gessner (1516–1565) was Zurich's great Renaissance polymath and one of the fathers of modern botany — his unfinished 'Historia Plantarum' ranks among the most important natural-history picture works of the era. This finely reproduced facsimile vividly captures Gessner's working method: hand-coloured plant studies shifting between finished rendering and quick sketch, densely surrounded by his trilingual notes in Latin, German and English. A charming, history-rich wall piece with a genuine Zurich connection.

Provenance

A decorative framed facsimile after an original plant study from Conrad Gessner's famous 'Historia Plantarum', clearly identified as a facsimile reproduction by the label on the back of the frame. The sheet bears the original page numbers '384' and '326' and Gessner's characteristic trilingual handwriting, including the English name 'Great Woodbind' (honeysuckle). An appealing piece of Zurich's scientific history for the wall.
