About the Work
Johann Baptist Isenring was one of the most important Swiss view-artists of the early 19th century and also a pioneer of photography in Switzerland. This aquatint depicts Frauenfeld as a tranquil country town with castle, church and half-timbered houses, set in an idyllic cultivated landscape with grazing cattle — a historical document capturing the Thurgau cantonal capital before industrialisation. The 'del. et sc.' signature confirms that Isenring executed both the drawing and the engraving himself.
Provenance
A charming window into Frauenfeld in the early 19th century: the St. Gallen artist and photography pioneer J. B. Isenring made this finely worked aquatint entirely himself; he both drew AND engraved it. Grazing cows, farmers in the field and the compact town silhouette with church and castle tell of pre-industrial Thurgau. In its original gilt frame with a gold-ruled mount, a ready-to-exhibit piece of Swiss print history.
