About the Work
This hand-coloured view captures Zug at a pivotal historical moment: with its newly opened railway station, steam locomotive and a steamer on the lake, it documents the town's entry into the railway age after 1864. Views of Zug that actually show railway activity offer a different view from the classic lake panoramas and appeal equally to local collectors and railway enthusiasts. The strong original colouring and the local Zug framing (Andreas Hürlimann) reinforce its regional provenance.
Provenance
Stamp on the back 'Einrahmungen Andreas Hürlimann, Schmidgasse 2, 6300 Zug': the work was framed locally in Zug and comes from a private collection in Zug. The station and steam locomotive in the image date the view to after the opening of the railway in 1864, which gives the sheet a concrete historical anchor.
