About the Work

This magnificent Paris lithograph shows Zermatt as a quiet Valais mountain village, long before it became a world-famous resort – a historically valuable document of its time. It belongs to the esteemed series 'La Suisse et la Savoie', lithographed by the master Eugène Cicéri after an early photograph by Friedrich von Martens, printed by Lemercier in Paris. Precisely this authentic, pre-tourism Zermatt makes the sheet of interest to collectors of Alpine and Valais views.

Provenance

The sheet comes from the lavish French series 'La Suisse et la Savoie' (plate No. 64), after a photograph by Friedrich von Martens, lithographed by Eugène Cicéri and printed by the renowned Paris workshop Lemercier, rue de Seine 57. An early, authentic record of Zermatt before the age of Alpine tourism.
