About the Work
This vibrantly hand-coloured print depicts a splendid historical pageant featuring the triumphal carriage of Charles the Bold of Burgundy — a direct reference to the legendary Burgundian Wars, in which the Swiss Confederates captured Charles's priceless treasure. The lively watercolour colouring in glowing blues, greens and reds beautifully highlights the Renaissance costumes, making this a decorative eye-catcher. The framing by the Weiersmüller art dealership in Thun documents a clean Bernese provenance.
Provenance
The work comes from a private collection in Zug and was framed in its day by the respected art dealer and framer A. Weiersmüller, Rathausplatz 5, Thun, as the original label on the back shows. This documented Bernese origin underlines the long collection history of the sheet and its continued appreciation in the Bernese Oberland.
Inscriptions
'Triumphwagen mit dem Zelte Karls von Burgund.' (unterer Bildrand); oben rechts Plattennummer '67'; unten rechts kleines Künstlermonogramm
