About the Work
This hand-coloured view shows Davos before it became the world-famous alpine health resort – a tranquil mountain lake with wooden chalets and church spires beneath the snow-capped Grisons Alps. The English caption points to the international travel literature of the Belle Époque, exactly when Davos was rising to fame as a sanatorium town. Its fresh original hand-colouring and documented Zug gallery provenance make this a charming piece of early Davos history.
Provenance
Acquired through the respected 'Galerie beim Rathaus' (Elfi Bolli, Fischmarkt 11, CH-6300 Zug), as documented by two original gallery labels on the back and an old price note (120.-). The mount bears the handwritten place name 'DAVOS'. A clearly attributed, hand-coloured original 19th-century wood engraving with a clear Zug provenance.
