About the Work
This vividly colored history print depicts Rudolf von Erlach, the legendary Bernese commander and victor of the Battle of Laupen (1339), flanked by two further knights in splendid heraldic dress. The fine hand-coloring and meticulous rendering of armor, horse caparisons and heraldry make it a decorative testament to the 19th-century Swiss cult of history. Framed in gold with a lined mat border, it is a genuine eye-catcher for lovers of Swiss history.
Provenance
The back of the work bears the label of 'Kunsthandlung Einrahmungen A. Weiersmüller, Rathausplatz 5, Thun', evidence of traditional Swiss framing and provenance from the Bernese Oberland. The sheet thus fits well with the Bernese hero Rudolf von Erlach and documents its path through a respected art dealer in Thun.
