About the Work
Johann Elias Ridinger is a central animal painter and engraver of the German Baroque, and his Augsburg hunting prints still grace hunting lodges and collections across Europe. This sheet records one specific stag, distinguished by its unusual lop ears, which the reigning Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt shot on 20 August 1754. The precise, almost documentary rendering unites keen observation of nature with courtly hunting culture. It is an authentic piece of the 18th century, signed by Ridinger himself in the plate.
Provenance
Der Kupferstich trägt in der Platte die Signatur «Ioh. El. Ridinger del. fec. et exc. Aug. Vind.».
