About the Work
This hand-coloured lithograph captures one of Zurich's great century-defining events: the legendary lake freeze of February 1891, when the frozen Lake Zurich became a vast open-air festival. With precise notes on the ice thickness (28 cm on the lake, 47 cm at the Schanzengraben), the print is also a genuine historical document – published by the renowned Zurich firm Hofer & Burger. The original St. Anna-Galerie label confirms clean Zurich provenance.
Provenance
The sheet comes from the stock of the St. Anna-Galerie, art dealer at St. Annagasse 9 in Zurich 1; the original label is still attached to the back. It was made as a souvenir of the great freezing of the lake in 1891, when half of Zurich celebrated on the ice with a market, riding and sleigh rides. Printed by Hofer & Burger, an established Zurich printing house.
