About the Work

Conrad Gessner (1516–1565) was the most famous Swiss naturalist of the Renaissance and is considered the first plant morphologist – his 'Historia Plantarum' was created in Zurich and remained a milestone of botany for centuries. This beautifully coloured facsimile preserves the freshness of Gessner's original drawing, complete with his characteristic Latin handwritten notes that make the sheet feel alive and personal. Provenance

A label on the back clearly identifies the work as a facsimile print from Conrad Gessner's 'Historia Plantarum' and names the three species shown: Colutea arborescens L., Plantago alpina L. and Plantago atrata Hoppe. Gessner (1516–1565), physician, botanist and the first plant morphologist, from Zurich, is one of the most important Swiss scholars of the Renaissance. The sheet bears the original numbers '153' and '153 b' and extensive Latin study notes that record the naturalist's inquiring eye.
