About the Work

Rudolf Dikenmann's hand-coloured aquatints defined the image of Switzerland that 19th-century travellers carried home. This sheet shows Rigi Kulm when the summit was becoming a meeting point of international Alpine tourism. Visitors still made the climb on foot, on horseback or in sedan chairs, as the cog railway only arrived in 1871. Lively figures and luminous colours make it an atmospheric period piece, elegantly presented in a gilt frame.

Provenance
