About the Work
This fine steel engraving comes from William Henry Bartlett's celebrated series 'Switzerland Illustrated' (c. 1836–38), one of the most influential English travel works on the Alps of the 19th century. Bartlett captured the dramatic sublimity of the Aar Falls at Handeck – a motif that perfectly embodies the Romantic Alpine enthusiasm of the Victorian era. The lone hiker on the safety rope lends both scale and narrative to the wild gorge.
